LGBTQIA+ therapy

Our sexuality and gender can form a big part of our identity and those who don’t fit society’s heteronormative ideal can come up against more challenges. Those who identify as LGBTQ+ can be seen as ‘different’ by some, facing discrimination, bullying and a lack of understanding which can lead to mental health concerns.

Speaking to a counsellor can help with some of the difficulties you’re facing, such as:

  • finding it hard to accept your sexuality
  • coping with other people’s reactions
  • low self-esteem and low self-confidence
  • fear of violence or abuse in public places
  • effects of bullying and discrimination
  • feeling as if your body does not reflect your true gender (gender dysphoria) transitioning
If you develop a mental health condition, therapy can help you find new ways of coping and either overcome or manage your condition. What’s important is for you to find a counsellor who you trust and feel able to talk to openly about your experiences. For this reason, it can be helpful to check your counsellor has experience working with LGBTQ+ people and/or has had appropriate training.

Couples Therapy

Relationships are a key part of our lives. They bring happiness and support, but that doesn’t mean they’re easy. When we encounter problems in our relationships, it can be difficult to know where to turn. Talking to a relationship counsellor can really make a difference.

Relationship counselling is an option you can undertake together as a couple, or as an individual. It provides a space where you can talk about your concerns and needs, as well as explore what you want from your relationships. Many relationships can be improved by counselling, even if there is no clear problem or issue.

Through speaking with a professional relationship counsellor, you can learn more about yourself, your partner, your friends, or your relationship. You can gain a better understanding of each other’s needs while receiving support and guidance that can help enhance and even strengthen your relationship.

Adult therapy

I come at counselling from the person centred approach which means I believe you are the expert on you and ultimately trust that you will have the most appropriate insight into the solutions available. I know how challenging that must sound, “why would you need therapy, if you had all the answers?” but I believe sitting with someone who supports you in finding the right way for you is a powerful vehicle for change. I have also had further training in a variety of different approaches including solution-focused and CBT approaches though my base approach is always person-centred.

I work with a variety of issues though the majority of clients who come to see me tend to be around relationships (family, friends, partner or workplace), mental health related issues such as anxiety, stress and low mood or around general development/direction. Feel free to contact me if you want to explore whether we can work together on whatever is troubling you.

Children & Young People Therapy

Child counselling offers young people a safe space to discuss and work through anything they may be struggling with. This could include family worries, exam stress and mental health concerns like anxiety and self-harm.
Child counselling gives young people the opportunity to talk about how they feel without the fear of judgement. Speaking to a counsellor, away from their home and school life can take away some of the pressure. Counselling offers a safe environment for children to express their feelings and understand what may have caused them to feel this way.

The methods used in sessions will depend on the child’s age, situation and development. There are a number of tools that may be used to encourage children to express their feelings better, such as through play and art. Reading stories and talking about the feelings of a specific character can help them understand the emotion and, in turn, encourage them to discuss their own feelings, while drawing, painting or drama can help the child express themselves better.

Older children may prefer talking therapy, or a mixture of both. This is down to the child and the counsellor, who will discuss the situation together to learn what method will be most beneficial. Although different methods may be used for child counselling, the aim of counselling for both children and adults is the same; to help the individual understand and cope better with their feelings, increase resiliency and live a more fulfilling life.

Some trainee counsellors need to have therapy as part of their course, others find that client work brings up things for them they would like to explore outside of therapy.

Clinical Supervision

A specialised form of professional mentoring provided for practitioners responsible for undertaking challenging work with people. Supervision is provided to ensure standards, enhance quality, advance learning, stimulate creativity, and support the sustainability and resilience of the work being undertaken (BACP, 2016b).

It is usually a formal but collaborative process that involves regular sessions; two or more people form a ‘supervisory alliance’ with shared objectives about how to work together constructively to provide a safe, ethical and competent service to clients. Usually, practitioners consult trained and experienced supervisors.

Good supervision is much more than case management. It includes working in depth on the relationship between practitioner and client in order to work towards desired outcomes and positive effects. This requires adequate levels of privacy, safety and containment for the supervisee to undertake this work.  Therefore a substantial part or preferably all of supervision needs to be independent of line management.

I am trained to deliver Clinical Supervision in the Hawkins and Shohet 7-Eyed Model and I am currently offering supervision to counsellors and also to those working in supportive/pastoral care professions, especially within the education/health sectors. For counsellors, supervision is an essential professional requirement to ensure effective and ethical practice. Supervision can also help allied professionals to have a space to explore and reflect upon the impact of their work. As a Person-Centred supervisor, my aim would be to always offer the core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard to ensure a supervisory relationship that is based on mutual respect, safety and trust.
